Chapter 553 - Success and Failure

Chapter 553: Success and Failure

Translator: EndlessFantasy Translation  Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation

It was during the time when the Undead Horde invaded the cities of the Mythical Continent, that the players should make sure that these Undead creatures do not enter the very center of the cities. It was the place where the warp portal and Resurrection Portal were at. If the Undead Horde had gotten a foothold on any of these places, the city would then be considered invaded and the Demigod NPCs would conclude that the players in the city had failed in defending it. The NPCs would then take matters into their hands and drive off the Undead. As a result, the players who were in the city would have all their Honor Points wiped clean.

Of course, the players could also opt to go on the offensive and attack the horde up front. All they needed to do was to defeat the hordes’ leaders—the Liches and the Spectral Shamans. If they defeated these Bosses, the Undead Horde would then be stirred into chaos as they lost their leaders. Without proper leadership to rally them against the players, it would be only a matter of time before the players defeated every single specter that held siege of the city. To add, the ban on city’s warp portal would be lifted too.

However, it would take more than just muscle to take down the Liches and Spectral Shamans, who were hiding behind the hundreds of thousands of Undead…

“Sis Pretty? These Specters are so annoying! When Little Eye kills one of them, another would just sweep in and take its place. See? There’s another one coming in again now. They just keep on coming! What do we do?”

On one of the walls in a small city, Xin Yu tailed behind Pretty woman and Blue-winged Butterfly while commanding Little Eye to attack the incoming Specters with its Tier 4 Earth Magic. As she drew a frown on her beautiful face, Xin Yu asked Pretty Woman inquisitively.

After learning that even Slash was trapped in the city, they immediately left the Elemental Wolf Plain. The plain was getting more and more dangerous by the minute, so it was a bad idea to stay anyway. Yet, they did not know that the situation back home was much worse.

The moment they walked out of the city’s warp portal, Rue City had already been surrounded by hordes and hordes of Specters. Wherever they looked, there were specters. The players all manned their respective stations at the city gate and the walls, defending the city.

They were lucky though, as the creatures outside the city walls were all just low-level monsters. So, even after they were all turned into Undead creatures, they were not able to deal much damage to the city. The only thing that was a threat was the Lich, who was being surrounded by the Tier 4 and Tier 5 players…

After listening to Xin Yu’s question, Pretty Woman could not help but feel anxious too as she was as clueless as Xin Yu.

As more and more reports started coming in from the clan chat, it was apparent that this was happening everywhere. Many cities were also surrounded by the Undead Horde. Like what happened in Rue, the other cities’ warp portals were also disallowing others from teleporting out of the cities. The others, including Slash, were all busy with fending off the Undead Horde. No one could come to her aid at that time.

“It can’t be helped then. We’ll need to hold our ground.” Looking at the crowd surrounding the Lich, Pretty Woman spoke to Xin Yu, “Killing a Lich would yield 800 Honor Points and high tier equipment. They won’t let it escape.”

Things like sharing the same clan insignia and pushing toward the Lich in an orderly manner… had all proven that Pretty Woman was right. There would always be people who valued material gains to the point they ignored the risks. Even though they knew they were no match for a Lich, they would still not give up on the chance to kill it. To these players, it’s not about the Honor Points—it was the loot that they wanted. They wanted the legendary and Dark Gold equipment, unique skill books and many others.

It didn’t matter if they died—the Resurrection Portal was just meters away and these Level 50 players didn’t care about losing Experience Points. Besides, there were many players in the city too and they could just swarm the Lich again and again. Sure, the Lich had over a hundred thousand HP but if the players were persistent enough, they could do this continuously until it dropped dead.

Still, after battling with the Lich for a few minutes, Pretty Woman saw that these players were not able to stand their ground anymore. Each time the Lich waved its claw, there would be a few players who were slapped to their death. And every time they died, the “corpses” they left behind would be turned into skeletons, which would then storm at the city gate, giving more pressure to the ones who were fighting off the Undead.

This time, they were not low-level monsters. These were all Tier 4 and Tier 5 Skeletons, much stronger than the low-level skeletons they had to fight earlier. To make matters worse, right after these players were resurrected from the Resurrection Portal, they flocked at the Lich in droves again. And the cycle continued.

“Morons!”

Pretty Lady was furious at these idiots who tried to deplete the Lich’s HP this way.

Indeed, since the players could be revived endlessly, they could go hit the Lich again and again until they eventually killed it. Yet, what they had not considered was that a Spectral Shaman covertly cast a weird black mist around the Lich—recovering its HP by the seconds. Every time they scratched the Lich, its HP would still be completely recovered. The damage they dealt on it was so minimal that it’s negligible as the Lich possessed tremendous amounts of Magic Resistance. Therefore, their Tier 4 magic attacks were not effective in wounding the Lich.

In other words, their plan was fruitless.

Well, not entirely fruitless. At least not to the Undead…

Every time the Tier 4 and Tier 5 humanoid skeletons stormed toward the city gate, Pretty Woman could not help but frown with frustration.

“Xin Yu! Use ‘Arcane Bog’! This should hold them!” Pretty Woman quickly cried out to Xin Yu.

As Xin Yu received her orders, her Level 31 pet “Little Eye” had already tossed its magic out to the enemies… a huge ten-diameter Arcane Bog appeared in front of the city gate, trapping the skeletons in the magic muddy bog.

The players who were defending the city looked on in amazement as Little Eye flinging out three shots of Tier 4 Magic. Pretty Woman and Xin Yu were used to seeing this though…

They had seen plenty of Little Eye’s impressive feats when they were grinding up his level. He could manipulate repulsion force to achieve flight when he was just Tier 3. Heck, he could even carry Xin Yu with him when he was airborne too. Apart from that, Little Eye could launch a Tier 5 AoE Magic Attack—”Gravity Dimension” and also another Earth-type Multi Magic—”Earthdragon Strike”. He could also create Earth-type Magic Barrier and Shield. That was just a fraction of his abilities. “Little Eye” was now almost as strong as a Tier 4 Elite Miniboss.

Pretty Woman and Xin Yu were not batting their eyes at the Arcane Bog anymore.

Nonetheless, this magic did save a lot of players who were hiding at the city gate.

There were only a few Tier 5 players left, and the rest were just Tier 4 players. Most of them did not even belong to any clan, making it difficult for collaboration, which in turn made it really difficult to defend the city. Other than that, there were many players who had never seen skeletons coming out of corpses before. They were all mortified as they saw these Tier 4 and Tier 5 skeletons crawling out of their fallen comrades’ corpses.

The Arcane Bog trapped the skeletons in its sticky mud and blocked the other oncoming specters from behind, giving the defending players some breathing room. On top of that, they were not going to flee in front of beautiful female players like Pretty Woman and Xin Yu. Hence, after a short time rejuvenating, they picked their feet up and continued launching AoE magic and physical attacks into the Arcane Bog!

As the skeletons and specters that were caught in the bog were all but wiped out, the city gate was finally safe…

However, the same could not be said for the inner part of the city as the Lich had broken through the walls! The new corpses that the players left behind were all turned into formidable militia, wreaking havoc in the city.

“Oh no! Sis Pretty! The Lich broke through!!” Xin Yu squeaked in horror as she pointed at the Lich.

“There’s nothing we can do.” Pretty Woman looked at the relentless Undead Horde and the immensely powerful Lich, and shook her head in dismay. “Let’s hold our ground here. We can’t do much with just the two of us. All we can do now is to just make sure we survive this onslaught and not lose our gear.”

The other members of Ascendant Saber were also trapped in their own hell at the moment. Even the clan leader Slash was having a hard time staying afloat; it was natural that they, a pair of Tier 5 and Tier 4 ordinary players, would find it difficult to fend off the horde. All they could do now was to minimize the damage that would be incurred on them.

“But you’ve got 200 Honor Points. If the city fell, all your efforts in gaining the points would be flushed down the gutter.” Xin Yu knew how much hardship Pretty Woman endured just to complete those Honor Quests. Her good “Sis Pretty” would surely be devastated if all the Honor Points were wiped clean.

“Aw, you goof. Honor Points can still be earned even if it’s gone. However, we can’t allow Little Eye to die. Sis Pretty will bring you to join the Honor Quests in the future if you want.”

“No.” Looking at Pretty Woman, Xin Yu’s stubbornness struck again.

“I’ll find Brother Qin. He’ll find a way.”

Pretty Woman replied with a smile, “Your Brother Qin is still trapped in Underworld. If he wasn’t, I would already have contacted him right away.”

“… then, I’ll ask Sis Xiaoxiao.”

Pretty Woman looked at Xin Yu with inquisitively, “Xiaoxiao? The second-in-command of the Fallen Angels?”

***

Whitewater Town fared much better than Rue City.

The Undead horde and the Lich met their doom as soon as Fallen Angels, Bauhinia and Violent Army Clan marched to them from town’s west and north gates. The specters fell one by one as strike after strike of magic attacks were launched at them.

Even though the Spectral Shaman would revive the fallen specters over and over again, they still were no match against the hundreds of Tier 5 champions! It took less than ten seconds before the Skeletal Dragons, Vampires and skeleton monsters were all burned to ashes…

Right after its underlings had been wiped out, the Lich was sandwiched in between the Tier 5 Champions…

As they were being hit, (the Twelve Frostramparts by Xiaoxiao, Tidal Sunder by Qin Ruo, and Earthdragon Strike by Black Rock), there were also several dozen more Tier 5 Champions hurling their own signature attacks at the Lich.

As for Violet Orchid, she did not join in the battle. She was busy organizing and commanding players to fight the specters and Spectral Shaman, while also helping the weaker players from the town to retreat to safety. Occasionally, she would cast her Holy Magic to take out a few specters.

After a while, the system finally sounded.

The town has been successfully defended! The ban on the warp portal is now lifted!
